In celebration of National Recovery Month, this interactive panel presentation brings together a diverse group of professional nurses to share authentic narratives, lived experiences, and professional reflections on treating substance use disorders (SUD) among colleagues and loved ones.

Learner Objectives

1. Analyze how personal narratives and lived experiences inform clinical care associated with substance use disorders and can support a person-centered environment. 
2. Identify at least two communication strategies and/or intervention techniques shared by the panelists to actively initiate supportive conversations and advocate for recovery-focused resources.

Presenter

Suzan Blacher, PhD, RN, CNE, CARN; President Elect, ASAN; Nova Southeastern University; Miami, Florida

Dr. Blacher is a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) and has worked in the field of substance use disorders for over twenty years. She is currently employed as an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University in Miami, Florida, where she teaches prelicensure nursing students. Suzan includes evidence-informed substance use education in all her classes. She is the President-Elect of the American Society of Addiction Nursing (ASAN) and is the former President of the Addiction Nursing Certification Board (ANCB). She has presented nationally and internationally on numerous topics related to substance use disorders.
