American Society of Addiction Nurses (ASAN) recognizes  addiction is a chronic disease crossing all boundaries including the nursing profession.  ASAN understands the importance of advocating for nurses in recovery while at the same time, ensuring public safety as a priority.  ASAN endorses the ANA Code of Ethics which addresses substance use disorders in nursing, which has many facets, including the importance of extending care and compassion to colleagues who are in active addiction and recovery.
