The presentation will provide a comprehensive overview of current trends of Substance Use in Society. A pictorial drug review with associated health risks will address the gap in clinical practice while examining the prevalence of drugs in the society we live in. Research presented will demonstrate how new and innovative treatment strategies are being developed to promote recovery. Discussion will encompass the overarching goal of how a Therapeutic Relationship between a nurse and client can facilitate lifestyle changes towards Health Promotion and wellness.

Learner Objectives

  1. Identify commonly used substances of use and misuse. 
  2. Describe the health implications associated with Substance Use Disorders and new innovative treatments being offered. 
  3. State the importance of utilizing Therapeutic Communication Strategies with this population served.

Presenter

Donna White, RN, PhD, CNS, LDAC I, CARN, Hanover, Massachusetts

Donna was the Addiction Specialist for the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, a Public Health Hospital for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  She is the former Chief Operating Officer and Nurse Executive at Worcester State Hospital. In addition, she was the Director of Nurses and the Director of Chemical Dependency Services and the Dual Diagnosis Program at Pembroke Psychiatric Hospital. In September, 2022, she will assume The Director Position of the University of Massachusetts Boston Alcohol Counseling Education Program (ACEP). She is a recipient of the Massachusetts Addiction Educator of the Year Award.
