Tobacco/Nicotine dependence is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, killing more than 490,000 American’s annually (USDDHS, 2024). Those who suffer with Behavioral Health Disorders (BHD) and/or Substance Use Disorders (SUD) are disproportionally impacted by nicotine addiction. Additionally, these individuals who use tobacco/nicotine products die up to 15 years prematurely and it is more difficult for them to quit (CDC, 2024). Myths are abundant about not treating nicotine addiction while treating BHDs or SUDs. This webinar will discuss the impact BHD and SUD’s have on nicotine addiction and a person’s ability to quit. Cessation techniques will be explored to help healthcare providers positively impact patients’ tobacco/nicotine cessation rates.

Learner Objectives

  1. After attending this webinar, participants will be able to describe tobacco/nicotine addiction and explain how it disproportionately negatively impacts those with BHDs/SUDs.
  2. After attending this webinar, participants will be able to apply the 2 A’s & R (Ask, Advise, Refer) brief intervention with their tobacco/nicotine dependent patients.
