Research suggests 14 -20% of Nurses in the United States struggle with substance use disorders. This number is believed to be underreported due to stigma associated with substance use. Alternative to Discipline Programs began in the 1980’s to protect the public, assist in seeking treatment and advocate for the nurse in recovery. This webinar explores

Learner Objectives

  1. Identify how secrets and shame impact nurses seeking treatment for substance use disorder. 
  2. Recognize red flags for SUD in the nursing profession. 
  3. Understand the role of Alternative to Discipline Programs as they pertain to public safety and advocating for the nurse in recovery.

Presenter

Rosemary Smentkowski, DNP, MSN Ed., PMHNP-BC, CARN; New Hope Integrated Behavioral Health; Marlboro, New Jersey

Rosemary began her career as a LPN and credits professional nursing organizations and the many nurses in leadership for their mentorship. She currently works with inpatient substance use adults and adolescents as PMHNP-BC and teaches as adjunct professor and two Universities in both pre-licensure and graduate programs.
