Description

Human trafficking is a criminal enterprise sparing no demographic or location. It is a global humanitarian and public health crisis that is vastly unidentified. Its victims walk among us yet are hidden in plain sight. The intersection of human trafficking with healthcare is exponential. However, due to the lack of education and preparedness of healthcare professionals surrounding this topic, victims are “unseen” in the clinical setting. This presentation will discuss the realities of human trafficking; describe the scope of the problem; review vulnerabilities, diverse clinical presentations and red-flag findings; and provide ways to identify and respond to a victim. Learner Objectives Identify the significant intersection of human trafficking with healthcare, as these victims are presenting with diverse acute and chronic issues and mental health concerns. Recognize the significant lack of healthcare professionals’ preparedness in identifying, treating, responding to, and supporting victims of human trafficking. Explore diverse clinical presentations, and red-flag findings, including history of substance use and addiction, of a victim of human trafficking. Presenter Francine Bono-Neri, PhD, RN, APRN, PNP, FAAN; Co-founder & President, Nurses United Against Human Trafficking; Jacksonville, Florida Nursing CE This event is approved for Nursing CE with the California Board of Nursing.
