Emotional Intelligence is a core concept that provides an understanding that strengthens morale-building, productivity,  self-care,  personal and professional relationships, understanding, articulating critical and crucial conversations, and more. Emotional Intelligence cultivates leaders and exemplar health care providers. Leaders are usually seen as CEOs, supervisors, managers, and administrators, but you can be a leader in your role as an addictions provider- a leader where you are. You want to be a leader personally and professionally. Emotional Intelligence is the key. The complexities of health care require the EI skill set. This presentation will provide you with an overview of Emotional Intelligence in leadership and pave the way for you invest in emotional intelligence as a skill; setting the stage for optimal outcomes in addictions care.

Learner Objectives:

  1. Explain why Emotional Intelligence is Integral to Leadership.
  2. Analyze and discuss the 5 characteristics of emotional intelligence.
  3. Discuss the importance of emotional intelligence in the context of crucial conversations, Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI), and social determinants of health.
  4. Examine ways to utilize EI to build stronger personal & professional relationships, success and self-care.
  5. Discuss Emotional Intelligence in leadership and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment.

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Tracy Hicks is a dual certified APRN in Family Practice and Psychiatric Mental Health. She received her BSN from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2010, Master’s and Post Masters degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2013 and 2015, and Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Frontier Nursing University in 2017. She holds certifications in addictions through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board (ANCB) and Diversity & Inclusion through Cornell University. She is a Fellow of the International Academy of Addictions Nurses (FIAAN) and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP).  She was appointed to Texas Health and Human Services Behavioral Health Advisory Committee in 2021. She is the owner of C-Trilogy Comprehensive Clinical Care serving mental health, addiction, and primary care needs. This clinic is also an approved COVID-19 vaccine and testing location. She has spoken nationally, regionally,  and locally on topics such as Emotional Intelligence in Leadership, DEI, Social Determinants of Health, Behavioral Health, Addictions, and PrEP in HIV, and Addictions. She is also a paid pharmaceutical consultant for behavioral health. She serves as Program Coordinator of the inaugural BSN-DNP Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program, Co-Chair of the University Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEI), and Diversity Champion Faculty Fellow at Texas Christian University (TCU) where she promotes education on health equity, addictions, and care of those living with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. Her goal is to improve healthcare outcomes and increase focus on health equity in disparate and marginalized populations. She believes that leadership and business are integral to success in Nursing and  Advanced Practice Nursing and is currently an EMBA candidate at TCU class of 2023.
