This session will help addiction nurses recognize and manage key adverse effects associated with psychiatric and addiction medications. Participants will learn to define three important medication-related adverse effects, identify common drugs and interactions that contribute to these risks, and apply practical, evidence-based strategies to prevent, recognize, and minimize harm. The focus is on improving medication safety, enhancing patient outcomes, and supporting clinical decision-making in addiction care.

Learner Objectives

1. Name and define three adverse effects related to psych and addiction drugs. 
2. Identify common drugs that may cause or interact to cause these adverse effects. 
3. Identify an implement and approach to minimize risk for these adverse effects.

Meg is a family nurse practitioner and nursing faculty. Her diverse clinical experience includes inpatient addiction treatment, correctional health, veteran and undomiciled patient care, occupational medicine, acute and primary care. Meg is an experienced educator who has presented on trauma-informed care, psychopharmacology, substance use disorders, and sexual health. She is passionate about advancing evidence-based, compassionate care for marginalized individuals with complex needs.
