The Deadly Trio: Heroin, Fentanyl and Carfentanil

Description

This presentation will educate healthcare providers not only about the epidemiology and pharmacology of heroin, fentanyl and carfentanil use but also the associated physiological and health related complications. In addition, useful management strategies will be discussed along with preventative measures and implications for practice and policy.

Learner Objectives

  1. Discuss the current opioid epidemic occurring in the United States including the usage of heroin, fentanyl and carfentanil. 
  2. Distinguish the differences between heroin, fentanyl and carfentanil in terms of potency. 
  3. Describe immediate treatment for opiate overdose.

Presenter

Deborah Salani, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC, NE-BC

Dr. Deborah Salani is a Professor of Clinical and Director of the Post Graduate PMHNP program at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies. Dr. Salani has been practicing as a nurse practitioner for greater than 35 years. She is both a pediatric and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.
